Help us Promote the Unexpected Beauty of New Jersey and Celebrate the Importance of its Trees
On 7/7/07, 7 teams of 7 will set out on a 2-week trek across New Jersey and back. Seven generations from now, the walkabout will be remembered because over 1000 trees will be planted along the route.
Kenneth Little Hawk and Grandmother Beverly, the
spiritual grandparents of the Gatherer Institute, have carried their message thoughout the world: We must consider the impact of today’s actions even down to the seventh generation... especially for taking care of the environment, our Mother Earth.
Healthy Competition
The Walkabout is a team competition. Each team will compete against the others to complete tasks along the way. Each team will carry a camcorder, digital camera, tape recorder and journals. Supply vans will carry camping gear to our daily campsites. The whole journey will be filmed.
Training for the Walkabout
Training started in January. Participants are getting in shape, and learning techniques in filmmaking and storytelling. The storytelling instructor is Grandfather Little Hawk, a Micmac - Mohawk Native American who is one of the greatest living Oral traditions Storytellers. Included in our training team is resident "walking expert," Mr. Bob Saunders, who is famous for having walked completely across the United States.

Planting 1000 Trees
1000 Trees are being planted along the NJ Walkabout route during April as the first step in bringing public attention to the importance of trees in our daily life. As Little Hawk says, "Trees are the lungs of the Earth." They literally filter the air and produce clean oxygen for us all.
Trees for the Future is an international non-profit organization that has helped thousands of communities in Central America, Africa, and Asia improve their livelihoods and their environment by planting nearly 50 million trees in agroforestry and reforestation projects. Each year these trees remove over one million tons of CO2 from the atmosphere. For $100 Trees for the Future can plant an entire forest. For $40 they can plant 100 trees. Visit their website and contribute to their wonderful efforts to plant trees around the world.
